It was a convergence of top echelons Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS- South-West) at 10 Degrees Event Centres in Oregun, Lagos on Thursday as these young and vibrant erudite students from across different tertiary institutions in South -West gathered to honour Engr. Deji Doherty, an industrialist and Lagos PDP chieftain as Icon of Societal Development, this according to them is in recognition of his charismatic leadership acumen, passionate and professional capabilities towards youth and students development in Lagos and Nigeria at large.

The event which started with a sololidarity songs peculiar to students has the National Chairman of NANS, Moses Samson Adewale who gave the opening address. In his speech Adewale pointedly said the move to honour Doherty was not political motivated in anyway. He described him as a successful businessman who despite not holding any political office has been surviving and surging ahead in his businesses.

“Following the several researches made, I personally got to know you as the CEO of Michael Baden Technology, CEO 10 Degree Event Centres and member Small Medium Enterprises and many others. We must appreciate the efforts of an individual who without holding any political post in the past could go this far, this move is not politically motivated but seeing a man despite being in a opposition party thriving in his businesses and still being an employment of labour. NANS is all about having a better society and not using politics to intimidate anyone, I think Engr. Deji Doherty deserves this accolades.”
However, Doherty who said he was amazed when representatives of the union came to present the letter said while welcoming the executives.

“I was intimidated by their letter knowing fully that I am not a public service holder, but the persuasion further convinced me that they really are not political jobbers.”
“There was a debate before their arrival whether to have PDP flags here or not and I said frantically that this is not a party thing, PDP is a party and will remain one forever while Adedeji Doherty is an individual whose contribution is being appreciated that the executives of the National Association of Nigerian Students deemed fit to award, it’s a great thing happening today and I must say I really appreciate this coming from young people like you.”
Engineer Deji Doherty however seized the opportunity to declare his intention for governorship come 2019 with a lot of promises for students.

“Just few days ago, I was searching on net if there are any Scholarship Scheme provided by Lagos State Government to her students, and to my amazement there was none. I personally took this to Governor Ambode’s personal Twitter handle to let him know he has done nothing to improve the lots of students in Lagos and to my surprise few days later I heard in the news that he gave N5m Scholarship for Best Graduating Student in LASU. It’s quite amusing.”

Doherty further promised the representatives of the NANS that his government if voted in, in May 2019 would ensure students of tertiary institutions in the state have access to his Scholarship Scheme which according to him will be within and outside the country.

“Come what may, I’m one of the PDP aspirants in the coming election. We don’t need to blow our trumpet because to me there’s an already designed strategy. We are going on a volcanic phenomenon.
APC is built on nothing and would end up on nothing, they have perpetrated many unlawful means to sink PDP, yet PDP is still here to stay. They said Obasanjo should be probed over N16 billion electricity project, they knew this when they were still hobnobbing with him, when he was there endorsing Buhari. Fashola came on national TV to announce to all of you that electricity would be restored in 6 months, have you been enjoying that? All I need is your support, get your PVC and see what would happen in 2019.”
Other Lagos PDP stalwarts were also present at the event.
